History
An intriguing mix of Copenhagen’s past and present can be found at Café Sari. The building the restaurant is located in, as well as the surrounding streets and the adjacent square, tell fascinating stories dating back to 1606 when Nytorv was built on King Christian IV's orders.
The property called ”Frisch's Gård”, where Café Sari stands, belonged to Justice Hartvig Marcus Frisch 1799 to 1803 - after a fire in 1795 wiped out most of the houses at Gammel Torv and Nytorv.
The old Town Hall, formerly located halfway between Nytorv and Gammel Torv was then moved to its current site. A plate on Nytorv serves as a reminder of its old location, while also pointing out the place where the scaffold stood in the 17th century.
The restaurant took its name from the Copenhagen City Court, located on the opposite side of Nytorv, which was built from 1800 to 1803.
A large photograph hangs inside our restaurant showing the old marketplace which existed on the square just outside the restaurant's doors around the year 1910.
Until 1993 our premises held a restaurant called “Risotto”, serving typical Danish cuisine.
In 1993 the restaurant changed its name to Domhuskælderen.
In 2009 the restaurant changed its name to Café Sari. Our aim is to keep the same traditions and values that have always been a part of Nytorv.
We look forward to welcoming your visit at Café Sari.
